John Marsden Hanmer: Great Great Great Grandfather (1795-1828)

John Marsden Hanmer was born on 3 June 1795 in Liverpool. He was baptised at St James's Church, Toxteth, later that year on 22 October. At the time of his birth his parents Thomas, a Shipwright, and Jane were living in Crosbie (Crosby?) Street. John married Mary Quail on 4 December 1820 when he was 25. By then he was working as a Surgeon in Liverpool.

The couple were married by Banns at St Nicholas’ Church in Liverpool by Samuel Renshaw AM, Rector. Mary too was from Liverpool. She was 22 at the time of her marriage, having been born on 17 January 1798 the daughter of John Quail, who was a tailor, and his wife Dorothy.

John and Mary had 4 children, all born in Liverpool.

Twins Dorothy and Jane Elizabeth, born in 1823. They were baptised on 23 July 1823 at St Peters’ Church. Jane Elizabeth’s life was short: records show that she was buried at St James’s, Toxteth on 17 August 1824.
Thomas, my Great Great Grandfather, born in 1825. He was baptised at St Peter’s on 5 September 1825.
Jeremiah born on 16 April 1827 and baptised on 11 June 1827 at St Peter’s. At that point John was still alive and working as a Surgeon.

John died very young, in 1828, at the age of only 33. According to his son, Thomas, he caught a cold while out doing his rounds. It developed into a fever, and a few days later he passed away. John was buried on 25 October 1828 at St James’s Church Toxteth by John Smith, Minister. His wife Mary survived him by 44 years, dying on 25 September 1875 aged 77.
