John Murray: 1848-1904

John, or Jack as he became known, was born in Edinburgh on 17 May 1848. He was the 4th child, and the second son, of my great great grandparents Elizabeth and Abijah Murray Senior.

A stationer by trade John emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. On 30 August 1881, at the age of 33, in Richmond, Melbourne, he married Emma May. Emma was born on 3 June 1857 in Melbourne and was 9 years younger than John. Her parents were Thomas May and Emma Bloxsome.

The couple had 8 children. William “Bill” was the eldest. He was born on 17 April 1882.

He went to the 1912 Olympics and was the oldest practising solicitor in Australia in the 1970s. In 1920 he married May (“Maisie”) Anne Geer. They had 2 children, David Stuart Murray, born in 1920 and Barbara Ruth Murray, born in 1922 in Brunswick, Victoria. Maisie died in 1949 aged 54. Bill died in 1977 aged 95.

John died in Macedon, Victoria, Australia on 7 December 1904. He left a will. Read it here.

On his death John not only left his entire estate to his wife Emma, but he also appointed her as the executrix of his will. In order to fulfil this role Emma had to swear an oath confirming that she was the person mentioned in her husband's will. Read a copy of her oath here.

Emma died in Prahran, Melbourne on 22 September 1936.
