Rev William Hassal, born 7 January 1751, married Elizabeth Satterfield of Wirkworth, Derbyshire, on 21 July 1788 (witnesses Joseph Satterfield and John Leech). Elizabeth died in 1818; and William died on 6 February 1829 at 15 Dickinson Street, his daughter’s home). He is buried at Blackwater Street Unitarian Chapel, Rochdale.
William was a student at Warrington College of Dissenters (Warrington Academy) under Drs Aiken (the Rev John Aiken) and Priestly (Joseph Priestly, the natural philosopher and theologian) and a friend of Letitia Barbauld (nee Aiken), the poetess. In 1773 he was appointed Minister of Blackwater Street Unitarian Chapel in Rochdale in the graveyard of which he, his wife and 2 or 3 children are buried. The family of his maternal aunt had re-built Balderstone Hall and it was given to him in 1790. He used it as a boys' boarding school for the sons of the gentry. He lost his money in the Manchester and Rochdale canal. He had mortgaged Balderstone Hall and it was sold in 1827. He then lived with his daughters Elizabeth and Susannah in Manchester.
